Hej from Germany,
I found your site and almost all my questions I had about time lapse and motion control systems were answered immediately. I always wanted to do time lapse photography and had a few experiences since beginning of 2011 - static and fixed on the tripod (boring). After I found openmoco.org I started building and implementing a little moco-system (stepper based, shoot-move-shoot (& maybe continuous if I find a way to move the motor smoothly), fully controlled via DFRobot LCD shield). You'll know more when I finished it.

Hey CM, thanks for joining us!
One of the tricks to smooth continuous stepper motion is, alas, to gear down further - the steps can be too jerky when pulsing only a few a second, but if you can make a few dozen, or a few hundred a second, then it will smooth out nicely. =)
