Hi! could use some starting out help

Posted in

Hi everyone!
My name is Michael and im from Belgium
(aka the land of waffles, chocolates and beer)

Im new to this forum (and the moving time lapse scene).
In the past i have made several time lapse videos, but never
with a rig or slider.

Although there's nothing wrong with static
shots, i think you all agree that movement makes
a big impact on the final outcome of the shot.

As many off you i started searching for a reasonable priced
solution and a future proof design. The Arduino seemed to be
a perfect candidate. Because my programming skills are not
adequate for making a truly original design i found openmoco
to be a perfect lifesafer.

Ive read all the articles and forum posts on here, and i get the
big picture. Yet i would like to ask you guys for some help making the right choices.

So far i own a Arduino Duemilanove
and ive orderd a DollyShield from dynamicperception.

2 big questions remain,

- what are my options for choosing a dc motor
that is compatible with the dollyshield?
- were could i find one(Europe,Belgium?)
- Can the Dollyshield provide pan and tilt movement (head) ontop of
the movement from the slider?

I really appreciate the help!
Looking forward to meeting you all on the forums

Thanks! Michael/Lacrysto

I've been getting most of my

I've been getting most of my parts here http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/Welcome.html.

-Your options for the DC

milapse's picture

-Your options for the DC motor are anything up-to 1A
-DC motors are very common motors. Look for industrial supply type stores.
-Actually yes, if you pick up the Orion Teletrack or the Merlin Acuter you can build a patch chord and control not only that head but also the two DC motor ports on the dollyshield. Here's the documentation on controlling the telescope head: http://dynamicperception.com/?main_page=wordpress&page_id=334

Hi eyedesign and

Hi eyedesign and milapse
Thanks for the information!
Conrad seems to have some options, but there not very cheap :-(
Eyedesign could you recommend a dc motor on conrad?

Ive read the article on working with the merlin or orion telesope mounts
looks very interesting! But if i understand correctly it doesn't provide
full control with the dollyshield. And doesn't really seem to be future proof.

Anyway, i will take my time for further reading,
thanks for the reply's! appreciate the help

Hello Lacrysto, I didn't go

Hello Lacrysto,

I didn't go with a DC motor I went for the Stepper motor. Below are links to the stepper motors I'm using.

http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/197647/60MM-SCHRITTMOTOR-18-28A-11-NM

This one works with my setup but I'm not happy with the torque I'm getting. I just ordered this motor and gearbox and will see if it works better.

The RS shop here in Germany has this gearbox in stock, but its a pain to get them to ship it.
Another place you may want to check for parts is:

If you need more info I can send you my partlist with all the suppliers I found.

Hope this helps

Hi Thomas Thank you for

Hi Thomas

Thank you for sharing your resources.
I don't really mind using a step motor,
but im using the dollyshield,
if im correct it doesn't support step motors, just dc motors.

Ive been looking for the dayton gear motor used in the perception dolly.
Your text to link here...

Still i have not found any suppliers selling this unit in Europe,

If you like i would appreciate your partlist with suppliers,
that would be really helpfull!

can i send you a pm on this site?
Can't seem to find a way to do this.

Thanks

Michael

Hello Michael, I don't think

Hello Michael,

I don't think you can do a PM on this site but you can find my contact info here.

Thanks Thomas! Ive just send

Thanks Thomas!

Ive just send you email.

Michael, You can order the

Michael,

You can order the exact motor we use (Dayton 2L007) from Grainger, world-wide. They have locations on every continent as far as I know.
