OpenMoCo Intervalometer

Posted in

I'm wondering can a camera manufacturer's software intervalometer be used with the OpenMoCo system? I'm using the Canon 5D Mark II and it has a proprietary connector. This means I would have to buy a Canon intervalometer to sacrifice. The camera comes with a software version of an intervalometer that I've been using for time-laspe images.

Eyedesign, You would have to

Eyedesign,

You would have to change the software to take input from another device as the triggering mechanism, and you would have to do modification to the intervalometer you have to send another signal out. You can buy Canon E3 (1/8" stereo) to N3 cables fairly cheaply (less than $15), or you can get a $4 Chinese job like this to sacrifice the cable: http://www.linkdelight.com/General-Remote-Cord/Remote-Shutter-Switch-for-Canon-1Ds-1D-5D-40D-As-RS-80N3/flypage.tpl.html

As for the software you're using, if you wanted to keep using it, you can, but you'd have to make a cable that comes out of the PC socket to inform the OM firmware of when the shutter is opened and closed, and then set the motor movements short enough (or your software interval high enough) to guarantee that you don't move during an exposure.

Generally speaking, all of the firmware and hardware on here does camera integration, and expects to act as the intervalometer, and you no longer have to buy an expensive Canon intervalometer to sacrifice as both the cables are available as there are very inexpensive Chinese remote shutter triggers that are usually a fraction of the price of the cable alone.
