Stepper and gearbox

Posted in

Hi gang

I tried buying the "17YPG3 with 19:1 planetary" from anaheimautomation they stated they have 8 week waiting time to deliver.

I have a stepper from SmarkFun

Do you have any suggestion for a gearbox to go with that one?
I am looking at the list that was posted here for parts as reference.

You're not going to find an

You're not going to find an inexpensive one of any real quality, from my experience.

Are you looking to make pan, tilt, or dolly?

19:1 is appropriate for dolly, not for pan/tilt.

They have the 139:1 in-stock as of last week for about $70 total. (Or 136:1? I can't remember exactly, but I spoke w/ them on the phone last week, and that's the only one they can ship immediately.)

FWIW, Stock Drive Products

FWIW, Stock Drive Products usually has gearboxes (they call them gearheads) in-stock. You'll need to do quite a bit of looking to find a decent priced one, but I understand some have found applicable ones for under $200 through them: https://sdp-si.com/eStore/

EDIT: here you go, I found the part someone had said they were using from SDP: https://sdp-si.com/eStore/PartDetail.asp?Opener=Group&PartID=51867&GroupID=53 - of course, it's out of stock right now, and the guy complained quite a bit about the backlash.

It's often hard to find anyone who'll put a price on the gearbox right online, they usually want you to call. I did see a UK-based supplier the other day that had prices in the 200 pound range. I can look them up if you like.

EDIT: I can't find the original supplier off-hand, but Rino Mechanical sells the same units I saw, they offer a "$9.95 prototype" for qualified OEMs, but don't list the normal sales prices. Getting that deal would, of course, involve a lot of unethical behavior and lieing, I'm sure...

Thanks for quick reply. I am

Thanks for quick reply.

I am doing the dolly work now, so the 19:1 from anaheimautomation sounded like a perfect deal, great price compared to some of the other stuff around.

I will try and get in touch with Rino Mechanical, thanks for the info. Maybe I can somehow use doing my Master project approach for that, as that would be 100% true.

139:1 or 136:1 could that be suitable for the dolly at all?

That would be overkill, but

That would be overkill, but would function =) You'd just have to take a lot more steps.

FWIW, I think you can pay them $20 to rush your order, and cut it down to like 4 weeks.

It floored me but it was

It floored me but it was actually $50 for the air rush! ugh. Yeah it was something like 4-6...

i contacted rhino a couple months back. the cheapest piece that i thought might work was $500 and once they found out i was an individual, not a company, they were pretty unenthusiastic and rude.

Anyone heard of this

Anyone heard of this company?

No, but I see they are

No, but I see they are represented by ERIKS here in the Netherlands. ERIKS is a serious company that sells good equipment for what I have heared.

I am waiting for a response

I am waiting for a response from them.

That looks like a perfectly

That looks like a perfectly appropriate gearbox, the efficiency is good, and the backlash is too.

Let us know if you find out anything on low-volume pricing.
