Autostar Updater doesn't work in Windows 7 x64?

Posted in

Had a lot of trouble getting the Meade Autostar Updater software to work on my laptop with Windows 7 x64 using a USB->Serial adapter.

Clicking connect instantly gave me the error "Could not find COM Port. Check your connection and try again"

I ended up doing the firmware upgrade with an XP PC using the same serial adapter and it worked fine. The TimeIsMotion software itself runs just fine under Windows 7 x64, again using the same adapter.

Might be worth adding some notes here ( http://www.openmoco.org/node/25 ) as for a long while I though I was making the cable incorrectly.

What COM port was your device

What COM port was your device using under Windows 7? I believe lots of windows software seems to have issues with COM ports higher than 9, as Windows requires special addressing to use ports COM10 and higher (for example, in slim you have to enter it as \\.\COM10). I don't think the author of the updater software took this into account.

It's very easy to work-around, just use the device manager to set the com port to a lower number.
